BioMag Laboratory, HUS Medical Imaging Center, Helsinki University Hospital
The BioMag Laboratory in Helsinki University Hospital started operation in 1995, and brought bioelectromagnetism into hospital environment to further develop the technique for clinical needs. The laboratory provides several complementary, state-of-the-art brain research methodologies: magneto- and electroencephalography (M/EEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and near infrared spectroscopy imaging (NIRSI). For cardiac research, the laboratory provides magnetocardiography and body-surface potential mapping.
Research conducted in BioMag has paved the way, e.g., for the use of MEG and TMS in preoperative functional assessment of epilepsy and brain tumor surgery patients, and for the established role of TMS in treating chronic pain.
